Getting Your Pool Ready For Fall: Best Practices

For pool owners everywhere, fall represents that specific time of year where you most likely will not be taking a dip every single day, but at the same time you are not quite ready to close things up for the winter, either. If you really want to make sure that your pool is operating at peak efficiency all season long, there are a few key tasks you will want to keep in mind.

Cleaning is More Important Than Ever

As the seasons begin to change, you are probably going to notice more debris than ever covering the surface of your pool. Even if you are not actively using it every single day, you will need to be vigilant about your cleaning schedule. Not only should you remove all debris from the water at least twice a week, but you will also want to pay particular attention to your skimmer, your filters and any other accessories that you have.

Check That Equipment and Check It Well

Along the same lines, you will also want to be proactive about making sure that your pump is working properly during the fall - check it frequently to make sure that there is no calcium buildup on the chlorination cell. Remember that even though the weather is getting cool outside, you still need to be able to rely on that pump on a regular basis. For the best results, you should still try to run it for at least four hours a day, if not more.

Don't Forget About Your Water Balance

Regardless of what time of year it is outside, your water balance is always something that you should keep a watchful eye over. You do not want to have to deal with the type of algae outbreak that will not only ruin your experience, but could also damage all of the critical equipment that keeps your pool functioning.

As the temperature starts to drop a bit outside, make sure that you are keeping your pool properly balanced at all times. This is something that you can never check too often. Checking once a day will help make sure that everything is as it should be. If you find that you need to "shock" your pool to treat a particular type of chlorine deficiency, algae outbreak or other problem, there are a number of products you can buy at your local pool store to do exactly that.
